Careering Off

After over 30 years working, Ronnie & Michelle have decided to take the gap year (or two!) that we missed out on at the usual time. We have had stressful careers in Technology and Finance until now including start-ups and self-employment.

About

The kids – Cameron & Daniel – have fled the nest to pursue their own adventures in life, leaving only the cats Tiger and Lexey to tie us down.

Following a health shock and seeing what has happened to many people we know around our age, we decided not to wait until we are in our 60’s and retired before resuming our love of travel and seeing the world. We are in the fortunate position of being able to pause working for a while.

It’s now time to career-off.

Udaipur

Udaipur

We took the bus to Udaipur, stopping at Roopraj's weaving croft on the way. This is world famous and one of the top weaving places in India. Roopraj welcoming us to his "croft". An extremely impressive yet relaxed guy. Demonstrating with his wife Laying out the wares...

Jodhpur

Jodhpur

Jodhpur, whilst a big city, was a refreshing change from Delhi. It's known as the Blue City. Normally only people from the highest Brahmin caste could use the colour blue, but the the locals were granted permission to do so as a social leveler by the enlightened...

Delhi Daze

Delhi Daze

The first day we arrived, we had a siesta in the afternoon to try to recover from the jet lag and lack of sleep before meeting our G Adventures group and CEO (Chief Experience Officer) in the evening. Then we headed out for dinner together. One of the first things the...

Going Raj

Going Raj

After over a month at home getting our new house properly sorted, we're off to India for the first time. It's probably long overdue, especially given that curry is our favourite food. We're starting in Delhi (of "belly" fame - what did I say about food?!) where we...

Pamukkale

Pamukkale

We took another overnight bus to the world-famous site of Pamukkale. It's the Unesco World Heritage site where the white travertines are found. The name means "Cotton Castle". The white deposits on the mountainside are calcium carbonate from the thermal springs. You...

Cappudocia, Turkey

Cappudocia, Turkey

We took a taxi from Batumi to the Turkish border and then a Dolmus (Turkish name for Marshrutka shared mini bus) to a town called Hoppa. There we hopped (sic) on an overnight bus to Nevsehir in the Cappadocia region. The bus journey was over 17 hours, and Michelle was...

Black Sea, Batumi

Black Sea, Batumi

We spent over 6 hours in a Marshrutka shared mini-bus to Batumi. En-route the driver stopped to put a clay pot on the roof. There was a big argument later with the owner when the pot cracked from the rough roads. The driver was stopped and fined by the police twice....

Vardzia and Akhaltsikhe

Vardzia and Akhaltsikhe

Not wanting another night stopover in Tbilisi, we travelled from Yerevan back over the border into Georgia via Tbilisi and on to Akhaltsikhe. That was a long day in two shared mini-buses (Marshrutkas) and the Tbilisi Metro to connect two bus stations in Tbilisi.  We...

Van to Yerevan

Van to Yerevan

We took a Marshrutka mini-van to Yerevan, across the border in Armenia. Yerevan is very close to the borders with Azerbaijan, Iran, and Turkey. Yerevan is a cosmopolitan city. Armenia is a country with a long history. It was the first country to adopt Christianity as...
