We met our new G Adventures group and CEO in Antigua. After a group dinner, we took a long bus journey to Rio Dulce. Rio Dulce is a large, navigable river, flowing 43km from Lake Izabal into the Caribbean sea. We crossed the second biggest bridge in Central America, then took a boat on the river to our hotel.

We were lucky to have a bungalow. As it was on stilts in the water, Ronnie suggested that Michelle didn’t need to go to the Maldives any more. Michelle’s reply isn’t repeated here.
The next morning we headed off on a speedboat to explore Rio Dulce.

There is a fort built by the Spanish to defend their looting of the indigenous civilizations of Central America from British “pirates”.

We sailed into mangroves.

Then we passed “Bird island”. The locals have encouraged the birds to nest on an island to keep them away from their houses.

We passed by some water lillies.

We arrived in Livingston which is home to people of the Garifuna culture. It is a fusion of African slaves who escaped and mixed with the indigenous people. They speak a language which is a mix of a native American, and African language.

A local group entertained us with drums and singing, and a local girl danced.

We stopped to fill up the boat with fuel for the journey back up river.
