Careering Off

After over 30 years working, Ronnie & Michelle have decided to take the gap year (or two!) that we missed out on at the usual time. We have had stressful careers in Technology and Finance until now including start-ups and self-employment.

About

The kids – Cameron & Daniel – have fled the nest to pursue their own adventures in life, leaving only the cats Tiger and Lexey to tie us down.

Following a health shock and seeing what has happened to many people we know around our age, we decided not to wait until we are in our 60’s and retired before resuming our love of travel and seeing the world. We are in the fortunate position of being able to pause working for a while.

It’s now time to career-off.

Petra

Petra

We were excited in anticipation of visiting Petra, the glorious jewel of Jordan. Petra is a huge site, and you can spend literally days walking around it. There is much more to it that simply the famous "Treasury" that most tourists visit. There's a fairly long walk...

Mount Nebo, Madaba and Kerak

Mount Nebo, Madaba and Kerak

We visited Mount Nebo from where Moses looked out over the Jordan valley and saw the Promised Land. Moses is also said to have died there, but there is apparently no evidence for that. From there we visited Madaba and saw the church with ornate mosaics.    Then we...

Jordan – Jerash and the Dead Sea

Jordan – Jerash and the Dead Sea

We took a flight from Cairo to Amman, Jordan to meet our new guide and group, although five of us were joining another ten for the Jordan tour. The first site to visit was Jerash, a Roman city ("Gerasa") that was part of the "Decapolis" league of ten cities that were...

Valley of the Kings

Valley of the Kings

From Luxor, we headed to the Valley of the Kings. This is where Pharoahs and High Chiefs were buried for a period of around 500 years up until 11 century BC. The valley contains at least 63 tombs, with perhaps more yet to be discovered. The area is perhaps best known...

Kom Ombo and Karnak

Kom Ombo and Karnak

In the morning, we sailed on to Kom Ombo. Kom Ombo was a very pleasant surprise. We had never heard of it before our trip. It was unusual in being divided into temples for two gods - the crocodile god Sobek, who represents fertility; and Horus, the sky god who is...

Around Aswan

Around Aswan

After arriving in Aswan, we took a boat to the Philae Temple. The Philae Temple is located on an island. The whole temple was moved block-by-block from another island which was flooded upon construction of the Aswan High Dam. Philae is said to be one of the burial...

The Wonder of the Giza pyramids

The Wonder of the Giza pyramids

We left early to get to the Giza pyramids before most of the crowds. We were excited with the anticipation of achieving a lifelong dream, and seeing the last remaining of the ancient seven wonders of the world. The city of Cairo encroaches onto the pyramid site. The...

Saqqara, Memphis, and Dahshur

Saqqara, Memphis, and Dahshur

We had two days in Cairo between the Alexandria and Egypt/Jordan tours. So we booked a private tour to visit Saqqara, Memphis, and Dahshur. First we visited the pyramid of Djoser, the Saqqara stepped pyramid. It is claimed to be the oldest building in the world, but...

Cairo

Cairo

We had a couple of days on our own in Cairo between the Alexandria and Egypt/Jordan G Adventures tours. We were lucky to have the same brilliant guide, Manar, for the next tour. We started the tour with a walking tour around the Islamic and Coptic district. Then we...
