Hadventures in Hanoi

We spent a few days exploring Hanoi – the capital city of Vietnam. The population is 7 million and there are 5 million scooters!

The Old Quarter is where all the bars and restaurants are. It’s a maze of narrow streets. There were originally 36 streets where each of the “Guilds” were based. So there was a Silk street, Meat street, Shoe street, etc.

Hats off

Surprising amount of trees lining the streets

Many of the buildings in the Old Quarter are very tall and narrow. This was of course because of property taxes based on the size of the footprint. At one time houses would only be a maximum of two stories – and not higher than the Royal Palace. That’s gone out the window now though, and they just add more floors.

Narrow footprint

We decided to try a Hanoi delicacy of Egg Coffee. I’m not yolking! It’s made with egg yolk, condensed milk and a lot of sugar. Despite how it sounds, it’s surprisingly good.
