Instead of the local bus, this time we took a shuttle bus to Antigua which is a very colourful colonial town.
There are many churches in Antigua, some of them still in ruins after one of the many earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

We took a trip to hike near Volcan Pacaya (Pacaya Volcano).
Pacaya, the one we were hiking alongside, was very active. Lava was being constantly expelled from the volcano.

I’m not sure how clever it is to hike so close to an active volcano which properly erupts regularly last had a big eruption just last year.

Apparently the volcanoes tend to erupt at the same time. So even less wise to be hiking in between them. The volcanoes are part of the active Pacific Ring of Fire. Ronnie’s previous experience with rings of fire were limited to the morning after a very hot curry.
An fun activity on the trip is to toast marshmallows in the lava.
