The End of the Earth

We had a 13 hour bus journey to Ushuaia- the most southern city in the world – the “End of the Earth”.

We had to get a ferry across the Magellan straight. We saw black and white dolphins and penguins from the boat.

Ferry across the Magellan straight to Tierra del Fuego

Looks like we’re across

Tierra del Fuego, or Land of Fire was named from the many natives’ fires seen by explorers. There are no volcanoes.

It’s the End of the Earth – and it’s summer here!

Where are we now Stefi?

Hello sailor

Cruise ships head to Antarctica from here

Did I mention before that Michelle likes penguins? So we had to take a bus and boat trip to an island where we could walk (carefully) amongst penguins.

Heading for a Penguin Expedition

Will they think I’m one of them?

Various marine mammals get washed up here from the Southern oceans. They have a museum with lots of different types of whale etc.

For me, one of the lessons was to see the five fingers for some of the sea mammals that are hidden in the flippers.

Landing on penguin (“Hammer”) island

There are lots of penguins on the island from two groups. They weren’t afraid of humans and we had to keep at least 3m distance. The penguins didn’t always stick to the rule with humans though!

Happy Michelle with the penguins

Say “fish”. Mother (or Father?) posing with chicks

Now, where’s that nest again?

One species of penguin nests below ground, the other nests above on a pile of stones.

Who trashed my bedroom?

What’s so funny?

Solemn sentry

There should only be two types of penguin on the island, but this King Penguin is lost.

Help! Where am I?

We returned by boat to Ushuaia via the Beagle channel. The channel was named after HMS Beagle, a survey boat, and not after any native dog species.

A bigger boat back to Ushuaia

It’s a very lively, noisy place

Last group photo. Spot the penguins.
