Confirming our re-invention as backpackers, we took the overnight sleeper train to Şəki (Sheki in English).

Cooler, greener, and wetter in the mountains after the heat and desert of Baku.
We visited the UNESCO World Heritage site of Shaki Khans Summer Palace. A very beautiful building both inside and out.
Photos unfortunately weren’t allowed, but there are many architectural acoustic features such as cornices designed to limit echos and the noise transmission between the rooms. We seem to have lost that knowledge in building design today.
Sheki was a significant producer of silk. Many of the interior designs included what we know as Paisley pattern motifs. The reason is that the Scottish city of Paisley shares these designs was that people returned to Paisley from India etc. and the town was a significant textile producer. They copied the designs from their travels. Unfortunately they only printed the designs on so the quality was not the same as the woven designs.
From here we’re heading off to the border and into Georgia.
